Opening of The Forest School Garden
On 5th June 2019, Holy Family Primary School had the grand opening of our new Forest School Garden. We are very excited about introducing Forest School into our curriculum.
The Forest School Garden was officially opened by the Mayor Mick Hayes and Mayoress Gillian Hayes. They were delighted to be part of the opening and reminisced about their childhood memories of learning through the outdoors. Both Mayor and Mayoress couldn't wait to join the children in digging in the mud.
We were pleased to welcome other guests to celebrate the official opening; representatives from London Wildlife Trust, Governors from Holy Family and St Thomas More Comprehensive schools, staff from all three partnership schools, representatives from Berkeley Homes, our school's Community Police Officer and Sisters from the Sisters of Mercy in Eltham.
We would like to thank the London Wildlife Trust for all their help and support in creating the Forest School area, Berkeley Homes for providing us with materials and Sisters from the Sisters of Mercy for their lovely gift to the school of a beautiful bug hotel for the Forest Garden.
Forest School is an inspirational process that offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences, in a woodland or natural environment with trees. Ms Wilkes has undergone intensive training and is now a fully qualified Forest School Practitioner and will begin to facilitate groups to experience this special outdoor learning.
Reception and Year 1 children were the first to explore the Forest School Garden and they were truly fascinated by the opportunities of self-initiated investigation in a natural space.
We are very proud of our new, inspirational learning space and it was lovely to celebrate the opening with all of our guests.
Nature around us speaks of your greatness – the vast expanse of the sky, the mountains, forests, oceans, lakes and streams speak of your great design.
We thank you for butterflies and flowers, birds and fish, stars and trees, all of these beautiful things you created for us.
We pray that all of your children see and wonder at these, and that the joy of these follows them through their lives now and forever.
